An informative and educational experience

From Mr D. G. Preece, MRPharmS

Earlier this month the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) hosted its 18th annual congress in Paris with the theme “Improving patient outcomes — a shared responsibility”. As a UK pharmacist and current secretary general of the European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association working as an intern in the offices of the EAHP, I found my first attendance at this international congress highly informative and educational.

This year for the first time it was my pleasure to be facilitating the student’s session “Student to hospital pharmacist: breaking down the barriers”. In this session speakers described the education required, job roles and future prospects of hospital pharmacists in Austria, France and the US. I hope that this session will continue and we are currently gathering feedback to create an even bigger and better session for next year. Over 140 students registered to attend for a special student rate and I hope that they were inspired to be the new generation of hospital pharmacists.

I am already looking forward to next year’s Congress in Barcelona (26–28 March 2014) and getting under the skin of its challenging theme “The innovative hospital pharmacist — imagination, skills and organisation”.
