    Harry was born near Barnsley in 1930 and won a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School in the 1940s. He studied pharmacy at the University of Bradford and qualified as a pharmacist in the early 1950s. Harry then spent three years serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps where he was stationed in Aldershot and in Germany.
