Deaths: John Edwin Balmford

On 1 July 2017, John Edwin Balmford, aged 86, of Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. Mr Balmford registered with the Society in 1953 and left in 2012.

Mr Balmford, a proprietor community pharmacist, served on the council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (PSGB) between 1963–1969, 1970–1988 and 1992–1995. He was designated Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1978, and was elected as president of the Society in 1978–1979, having served as vice president in 1977–1978. In 1988, Mr Balmford was awarded the Charter gold medal of the Society. He was founder chairman of the College of Pharmacy Practice, and received the College’s Schering award in 1991.

During his career, Mr Balmford also led two FIP working parties, served on the Joint Formulary Committee of the British National Formulary between 1978–1987, and was chairman of Staffordshire Local Pharmaceutical Committee and vice chairman of Derbyshire Local Pharmaceutical Committee.

Mr Balmford was a keen collector of pharmacy-related antiques, and held a large collection of English delftware drug jars. He also competed in nine London to Brighton Veteran Car Runs, usually racing in his 1903 Humberette 5hp.
