Tribute to Daniel Rowland Thomas

Daniel Rowland Thomas, known as Rowland, passed away peacefully and will be sadly missed by his many colleagues. Many people will have known Rowland through his management of the South Wales Specials unit in Swansea.

Born in 1949, Rowland attended the University of Portsmouth and embarked on a wide and distinguished professional career before settling in his final role as qualified person, consultant pharmacist and head of quality management for South Wales Specials Ltd and Stephar (UK) Ltd.

During his career, Rowland became a pharmacist member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, a member of the Chartered Management Institute, a member of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, as well as taking on the roles of postgraduate tutor and mentor of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

His experience was called on by many and he contributed to the set up of a sub-regional pharmaceutical quality control laboratory to provide analytical and support services to the local NHS. He also developed a sterile products service, which manufactured products including parenteral/ophthalmic products, developed a non-sterile products service and set up a repackaging unit at a local satellite hospital.

Rowland was very much involved in charity work. He lived with his mother and cared for her until her death in 2013.

Rowland’s funeral is due to be held at 9.30am on Friday 8 May 2015 at Morriston Crematorium, Swansea.
