The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) in Scotland has announced that John McAnaw has been affirmed as chair of the Scottish Pharmacy Board for a second term.

McAnaw was re-elected after receiving 289 votes in the recent RPS pharmacy board elections, the results of which were announced on 1 June 2016.

McAnaw is said to be “thrilled and honoured” following his affirmation: “I will work hard to ensure the RPS provides the right help and support for our members,” he says. “There is still work to be done on the back of the RPS Scottish manifesto and so I will continue to champion the profession and press for the changes it has called for to ensure pharmacists are able to provide the highest level of person-centred care to their patients and the public.”

In his supporting statement for the election of chair 2016, McAnaw set out his vision and objectives for the following year. Among these was a promise to engage with members and non-members to promote the benefits of the RPS and identify areas in which the Society can improve; continue to strengthen the Scottish identity of the RPS; advance the advocacy role for the RPS around the Scottish manifesto; and support the further development of local practice forums.

Ailsa Power was elected to serve as vice chair of the SPB and David Thomson was affirmed as the Assembly representative alongside McAnaw.

New to the board this year following the RPS elections are Kathleen Cowle, relationships and revenue manager for Scotland at Boots UK, and Johnathan Laird, a pharmacy manager and independent pharmacist prescriber. Cowle and Laird assumed their roles on the board on the 14 June 2016 and attended their first board meeting on 15 June 2016.
