10 May 2017: Sotiris Antoniou, spokesperson for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) on cardiovascular medicine, spoke to the Daily Express
about the link between NSAIDs and the risk of heart attack. The article was published in response to a systematic review and meta-analysis in The BMJ, which reported a raised risk of heart attack in when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, even for short durations.
“We now know all NSAIDs have the potential to increase the risk of having a heart attack,” Antoniou said.
“This paper suggests the larger the dose and the longer duration is associated with greater risk of harm. “If you have any doubts or questions seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor. It’s a good rule of thumb with any painkiller to take the lowest dose that’s effective for the shortest possible time.”
