Online pharmacies must meet standards of face-to-face consultations before prescribing antibiotics

17 February 2017: The
Daily Mail ran the results of research by a team from Imperial College London into the sale of antibiotics by online pharmacies, highlighting poor practice by some sites outside Great Britain.

“Unnecessary antibiotic use can result in serious side effects in individuals and has a major impact on wider public health by increasing antibiotic resistance,” said Martin Astbury, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. “We cannot support access to antibiotics through a web form until the standards for prescribing by private providers reflect the standard of face to face consultations in the NHS.”
