The US Food and Drug Administration is adding a boxed warning to prescription opioid painkillers and cough medicines, and benzodiazepines following evidence the two drug classes are increasingly being prescribed together

The FDA made its decision after finding that deaths caused by overdose associated with the combination of opioids and benzodiazepines tripled from 0.6 to 1.7 per 100,000 people between 2004 and 2011
