Action plan will tackle antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea
Plans for tackling emerging resistant strains of gonorrhoea have been published by the Health Protection Agency. The first "Gonoccocal resistance to antimicrobials surveillance programme" (GRASP) action plan sets out the need to monitor levels of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea in England and Wales and take action to extend the useful life of the current recommended treatments, such as ceftriaxone and azithromycin. It gives guidance on ensuring adherence to treatment, rapidly detecting treatment failure and reducing transmission of the infection by encouraging safer sexual behaviour.
