BMA calls for debate on rate of organ donation

By News team

A fresh public debate on organ donation is being called for by the British Medical Association amid fears that the Government’s target to boost the number of donors by 50 per cent by 2013 may not be met.

In its report "Building on progress: where next for organ donation policy?", published yesterday (13 February 2012), the BMA says a UK-wide opt-out donation system has the most potential to increase organ donations. The system would assume everybody is a potential donor on their death unless they have registered an official objection.

The Welsh Government is planning to publish a draft Bill introducing an opt-out system by summer 2012, which, if approved, could be put in place by 2015.

Other options proposed by the BMA for increasing organ donations include paying the funeral costs of potential organ donors or using organs from high-risk groups, such as older people.
