Final stage of Scotland’s CMS to be piloted next month

By News team

Serial prescribing and dispensing, the final stage of Scotland’s chronic medication service, will be piloted next month (March 2011) by early adopters.

Approximately 30 GP practices and 50 community pharmacies scattered across most NHS boards in Scotland will test systems and processes for serial prescribing and dispensing for 24 weeks, before wider roll-out, which is expected in 2013. Patients with long-term conditions will be supported using disease specific protocols in a shared care setting.

The pilot will identify local GP and community pharmacy champions to help with the wider roll-out of the service. It will also help inform the development of a range of national guidance on CMS, including practice manager guidance.

A spokeswoman from the Scottish Government said it is likely that there will be one further early adopter phase to ensure that all the systems and processes are robust before wider roll-out.

NHS boards have identified GPs and pharmacies willing to take part, and have selected adopters to ensure that a mix of IT systems are involved so that all can be tested properly, she added.
