Industry-funded trials shown to be biased

By News team

Clinical trials funded by pharmaceutical companies are more likely to be biased, a systematic review has shown (Deutsches Ärzteblatt International 2010;107:279, ibid p295).

Of the 26 papers that were examined to determine the impact of funding or author conflicts of interest on the trial conclusions, 23 papers were found to show positive outcome for the sponsor. Four of these papers were found to have been interpreted favourably towards the sponsor in the conclusion, independent of the results.
