Ketamine to become a class B drug
The Government has announced that ketamine will be reclassified as a class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, following a recommendation from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
The ACMD also recommended that ketamine is placed in schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001; currently it is in schedule 4, part 1. However, Norman Baker, minister for crime prevention, said that although reclassification would begin “shortly”, there would be a consultation to assess the impact of rescheduling on the medical and veterinary sectors.
Mr Baker said the decision to reclassify the drug has been made in light of evidence of the chronic harm associated with ketamine, such as bladder and urinary tract damage. Currently, ketamine is a class C drug.
