Limited opportunities in first wave of patient choice reforms

By News team

Diagnostic services and home chemotherapy care are two areas where community pharmacists could provide services under Government plans to open up the NHS to "any qualified provider" (AQP), according to the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee.

The PSNC said that the direction of travel for the proposals was encouraging although there were limited opportunities for pharmacy in the immediate future.

The PSNC also pointed out that guidance published last week made it clear that pharmacists and other AQPs who are not covered by the Care Quality Commission will be able to register with an alternative organisation if that is acceptable to the commissioner.

Its head of NHS services Alastair Buxton said: "While pharmacies won’t be leading the charge to provide services under the first wave of AQP, we’re encouraged by the drive to provide more choice for patients and it’s heartening to know that in the future, pharmacies should be spared the arduous task of double registration with regulators.

"The PSNC is convinced that convenient, high-quality and cost-effective community pharmacy services can offer patients real choice in future phases of the AQP roll-out."
