New sciences complex to benefit pharmacy at Sunderland

By News team

Pharmacy students at Sunderland University are to benefit from a new £8.5m sciences complex, which is opening tomorrow (16 February 2011).

The complex is expected to boost the university’s contribution to the design of new drugs, especially in the areas of bacterial resistance, psoriasis, transplantation, cystinosis and cystic fibrosis.

There are new facilities for drug discovery, pharmacy and health sciences as well as an industry-standard analytical services laboratory and scientific imaging suite.

Andy Husband, programme director of the university’s MPharm degree, said: “We have spent £2.3m on analytical equipment in an industry-standard laboratory that undergraduate students will have access to, which we believe will encourage their interest and involvement in research.

“We have also invested in patient simulation equipment which is designed for patient examination. The new complex will provide pharmacy students with a high quality experience, and cutting edge technology and curriculum delivery.”

The new complex has a suite devoted to the continuing professional development of health professionals and the pharmaceutical sector as well as multidisciplinary laboratories.

It is also hoped that the centre will help local businesses to develop science-based products and encourage further investment in research and development across the north-east region, which is currently half the national rate.
