Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

Michael Rawlins reappointed MHRA chair

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced that Michael Rawlins has been reappointed as its chair, and will continue in the role for a further three years.

Rawlins said that he was delighted to serve a second term at the agency, that regulates medicines and medical devices in the UK.

“One of the joys of this job is seeing each part of the agency continue to deliver innovative science and protect public health.

“I am looking forward to taking on the next challenge, as we seek to continue playing a leading role in both Europe and the world on promoting public health,” he added.

Rawlins was the founding chair of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), England’s health technology assessment body, from its launch in 1999 until 2013, before becoming chair of the UK Biobank, a charity that stores genetic material for research and prevention.

He was first appointed chair of the MHRA at the end of 2014.

In June 2017, Rawlins was made a Knight Grand Cross for services to the safety of medicines, healthcare and innovation.
