Plaid Cymru pledges to increase mental health spending and calls for drug law reform

Plaid Cymru would increase spending on mental health care by 5% every year over the next decade, according to the party’s 2019 general election manifesto.

The party also pledges to create a 24-hour Welsh Mental Health Crisis service, to work alongside the emergency services “for those in acute distress”.

The manifesto calls for a national commission on reforming drug laws, as it claims the current “hard-line” approach to drug misuse, “criminalises citizens who have an addiction, but does nothing to help them overcome their problems”, as well as criminalising “people who may use drugs medicinally or recreationally but who do no harm to others”.

Drug misuse services should focus on the “small number of people with dependency” rather than on all drug users, the manifesto says.

The party also wants the publication of all clinical trials, “to ensure transparency in medical research”, and “stronger regulation against false health claims being made in product marketing”.

Plaid Cymru pledges that if it is elected within the next period of government, all patient records will be fully electronic and all patients will have access to a digital health service for booking appointments, contacting specialists and viewing test results.

It also says that “robust standards” will give patients in Wales the right to receive NHS “face-to-face services” in Welsh.
