PM calls for global action on antibiotic resistance
Prime Minister David Cameron has called for global action to tackle antibiotic resistance, appointing Jim O’Neill, former chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, to lead an independent review into how to drive the development of new antibiotics.
Cameron warned of a return to the “dark ages of medicine” if there is failure to act and described an “unthinkable scenario” where previously treatable infections and injuries kill again. Concern has been growing in recent years because there are so few new antibiotics being developed.
