Protected learning time for pharmacists

Scottish health board covers locum fees to allow pharmacy staff to attend training sessions.

Community pharmacists in Forth Valley, Scotland, have been offered protected learning time to give them an opportunity to take part in training events.

NHS Forth Valley will cover £125 for locum fees while a pharmacist and a member of staff attend daytime training sessions.

The offer comes in response to calls from pharmacists for such cover. GPs have for many years been offered protected learning time, but this is the first time it has been extended to community pharmacists.

In a joint statement, Gail Caldwell, NHS Forth Valley’s director of pharmacy, and Kathleen Cowle, chair of the Forth Valley Area Pharmaceutical Committee, said pharmacists were now calling for more training sessions.
