Scottish government appoints new health secretary
Jeane Freeman has been appointed the new Scottish health secretary, following the resignation of Shona Robison for personal reasons.
Freeman was appointed by Nicola Sturgeon, first minister of Scotland, as part of a major reshuffle of her cabinet. Joe Fitzpatrick has been made minister for public health, sport and wellbeing.
According to her website, Freeman, Scottish National Party (SNP) member for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, has worked as a researcher at Westminster, a bookkeeper for a travel company and a researcher and script writer for the BBC. She established the social enterprise, Apex Scotland, to work with employers and ex-offenders. In 2005, she set up her own public affairs company, working with public and private sector companies and social enterprises.
Prior to her election as a Member of Scottish Parliament in 2016, she chaired the board of the Golden Jubilee Foundation and was a member of the Parole Board for Scotland and the Judicial Appointments Board.
Fitzpatrick is the SNP member for Dundee City West.
In her letter of resignation, Robison said the past year had been “particularly challenging, personally”.
