OTC tranexamic acid to launch in Boots stores
Tranexamic acid for heavy menstrual bleeding is to be made available over the counter from 31 January 2011.
The Pharmaceutical Journal understands that the product, Cyklo-F, will only be available from Boots pharmacies, since Boots has an exclusivity arrangement with the product’s manufacturer, Meda Pharmaceuticals, for the first 15 months.
A spokeswoman for Boots UK said: "The product will be available nationwide in over 1,800 Boots pharmacies and online at boots.com from 31 January 2011."
The product is licensed for women over 18 years of age with heavy menstrual bleeding over several cycles who have regular 21–35 day cycles with no more than three days individual variability in cycle duration. It comes in packs of 18 film-coated tablets and will retail at £8.99. The POM to P switch of the product was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in May 2010.
On 31 January, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society will issue professional guidance for pharmacists on tranexamic acid. The guidance will include information on licensed indications, contraindications and referral information. "This we hope will be especially useful for locums who may not have access to other sources of information," an RPS spokesman said.
