NHS innovation fund closed down
A £50m Government fund to speed up innovation in the health service has been closed down – only a month after it opened for applications.
NHS England said it has had to suspend the specialised services commissioning innovation fund (SSCIF) because it falls outside its core business and it can no longer afford to run it because of “unplanned expenditure”.
The organisation was “extremely disappointed” about the decision, according to its national clinical director of specialised services James Palmer.
In a statement, he said: “This has been a tough decision. We have taken it with great care having considered what is overall in the best interests of patients.
“There has been significant interest in the SSCIF from frontline clinicians in NHS and non-NHS providers, industry, patient groups, charities and others, which is evidence of a wealth of promising, innovative ideas.”
He confirmed that NHS England was still committed to leading on innovation and “will seek ways to reinstate the fund in future years”.
