Obesity has become one of the biggest health problems today and every so often a new drug emerges that claims it can help people to lose weight. Some drugs help weight loss by preventing fats from being absorbed, other drugs help sufferers to feel more full and decrease appetite. There is also surgery such as gastric bypasses and liposuction to help reduce weight however, I think these are all short-term fixes to a problem that is not physical but psychological.
The best way to argue this point is to look at celebrities; they have enough money to spend on the best fitness trainers and surgeons in the country. So when 'slightly overweight' celebrities turn to a quick-fix surgery they can look great for their front cover photo shoot but lo and behold three months later, all the weight is back on. This is called the 'yo-yo' effect as people look for easy ways to quickly lose weight but because they have not mentally prepared themselves to continue a healthy lifestyle, weight gain immediately follows.
Obesity drugs and medical interventions are necessary for severe cases but I think if overweight people were either councelled or took courses on healthy living they wouldn't have to rely on drugs. Perhaps I am wrong but I think overeating is a habit, a reaction to low mood or stress and sometimes simply because some people don't know how to prepare healthy (and tasty) food.
On the other hand, it isn't entirely our faults because the way that food is presented to us makes it easier to over-eat without realising. Take cereal packets for example, on the front it says how many calories there are in one portion. So what does one portion look like? With an entire bag of sugary flakes it is hard to tell when to stop pouring! Is it when the bowl is full or when we think there is enough to eat? One portion is roughly 30g and when I actually measured it, it's a lot less than I thought! Portion size is an important factor in healthy eating too without going insane and weighing every carrot we eat!
