In all walks of life, leadership is important. Being a good leader is vital to boost team morale and make positive change. It is important to realise that being a leader is not the same as being manager, the roles are completely different. This may seem obvious, but some would argue the two are similar. I would say one is a job, the other is a trait. So what makes a good leader? Well, in my opinion, there a few skills/characteristics that demonstrate positive leadership: •The ability to motivate/rally the team.•The courtesy to attempt to involve all members of the team, even those who seem shy/quiet.•The personality traits people tend to admire; professionalism, charm and politeness. •Superior communication skills. •The ability to make a final judgement based on evidence and ideas of the whole team.•A genuine desire to achieve a goal for the greater good; not one motivated by self-gain.•An innovative vision for the future. Whilst having a think about leadership within pharmacy, I discovered the ‘Leadership Competency Framework for Pharmacy Professionals’. The framework itself seems highly structured and develops leadership on based on five areas: demonstrating personal qualities, working with others, managing services, improving services and setting direction. I was having a quick flick through and I noticed under ‘4.3 Encouraging Improvement and Innovation’ it states, in a nice bullet point, to ‘Question the status quo’. This made me smile, I was under the impression pharmacy was all about being a traditionalist! I’m not being sarcastic, I promise. Anyway, for those of you who are interested in developing leadership, I would recommend giving it a quick read. It may also be useful for a CPD. On a pre-reg note, I believe it’s my 26 week appraisal this week. I hate to say/type it, but I feel like I’ve barely improved since the 13 week one. I can’t even remember the last time I wrote a decent piece of evidence. Well, that’s my reflection done, better get cracking hadn’t I?
