From Mr J. Martin, MRPharmS
I write in response to Dr J. F Harper's letter (PJ, 5/12 January, p20) claiming that the striking off of a pharmacist for failing to dispense methadone in accordance with the prescriber's directions was absurd.
I would hope that the Statutory Committee took into full consideration all the circumstances. In this case, I imagine that the overriding "circumstance" would be the Misuse of Drugs Act. To paraphrase it, you are not allowed to do what he did. Ever. Incidentally, this is not a comment from an ivory tower of "supreme detachment"; it is from the coal face; it is from a pharmacist who has been threatened with violence by methadone patients for similar reasons. How difficult can the circumstances get? Anyone accepting a community pharmacy position must also accept the responsibilities.
