Pre-registration training difficulties

Professor Martini is a PhD Pharmacist from Manchester University specialising in Drug Delivery with a MBA from the University of Liverpool, specialising in SME businesses and designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2008.

We have always believed that young talent should be nurtured and supported during the informative years when entering the profession. However, recently we have become alarmed at the number of reports from our students who have become disillusioned and demoralised as a result of their pre-registration training placement.
It is easy to dismiss these reports as students who are struggling to adapt from student life to a more stringent work environment, but we believe this may not be the case and that there are real issues which need to be addressed.
We would therefore like to validate our concerns and ask pre-registration trainees and recently registered pharmacists with concerns, or who experienced difficulties during their pre-registration training, if they would like to share their views with us in confidence. Having been involved with pre-registration trainees for many years I have come across so many horror stories of trainees being asked to do ridiculous things in the workplace. One of the most recent examples is a trainee being asked the clean the toilets in the pharmacy. Is this what we expect from our graduates? I recently did a webinar for the UKCPA and RPS on pre-reg tutoring and would recommend readers to at least look at the first couple of slides where I share a typical story that I came across from one my colleagues who asked for my advice as the trainee did not know who to turn to. We mustn't brush these things under the carpet and pretend that poor tutors do not exist.
