Patients could take more responsibility for health, say GPs

By News team

Most GPs believe patients could take more responsibility for their own health, according to a survey conducted to coincide with Self Care Week (12-18 November). Furthermore, GPs do not think their patients have the right medicines at home or the knowledge needed to treat minor illnesses themselves, the survey of 105 GPs revealed. A list of essential items that should be stocked in patients’ medicines cabinets has been drawn up as part of Self Care Week (see Panel).

This year’s Self Care Campaign starts with a conference called “Mission impossible” focussing on “Self care for life – growing older healthily” due to be held at the Institute of Physics in London on 8 November. The conference aims to determine what needs to change to make self care happen.

Suggested items for medicines cabinets

  1. A health care guide
  2. First-aid kit including guidebook, plasters, bandages, thermometer, eyewash solution, medical tape, tweezers, sterile dressing, antiseptic lotion/cream
  3. Painkillers – ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin
  4. Cold and flu remedies
  5. Anti-diarrhoea medicine
  6. Antihistamines
  7. Oral rehydration salts
  8. Indigestion remedies
  9. Sunscreen
