Pharmaceutical scientists welcomed into Society’s fold

By News team

Pharmaceutical scientists will be able to join the Royal Pharmaceutical Society from October following a vote by RPS members.

A special resolution ballot achieved a voter turnout of 8,806 members (24.8 per cent), with 76 per cent voting in favour of creating an RPS pharmaceutical scientist membership category.

The result of the vote was ratified at an RPS Assembly meeting today (27 July 2011), where President Martin Astbury expressed his "delight" at the result and thanked members for showing a positive response to extending membership.

He said: "The inclusion of pharmaceutical scientists will enhance the reputation of the RPS, which will in turn help to enhance the professional recognition of all our members."

The rules and regulations covering the new category will appear in the gazette section of The Journal for 60 days from 6 August 2011. The RPS will accept members into the new category from 10 October 2011.

Heads of schools welcome result

The result was welcomed by the Council of University Heads of Pharmacy Schools. "Within UK schools of pharmacy there are many pharmaceutical scientists who make a major and valued contribution to the education of the pharmacists of the future, and we are delighted that they will now be able to be part of the professional body.

"We believe that this will be to the benefit of the Society and profession into the future," said John Smart, head of the University of Brighton’s school of pharmacy and biomolecular sciences and chairman of the council.
