Ash Soni elected FIP vice president

Ash Soni, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Ash Soni, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, was elected as one of three new vice presidents of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) on 1 September 2018.

Carlos Lacava from Uruguay and Samira Shammas from Jordan were elected as the other new vice presidents for FIP and Dominique Jordan, a community pharmacist from Switzerland, was elected as president.

Jordan served as chief executive of the Swiss Association of Pharmacists (PharmaSuisse) from 2003 until 2014. Since then, he has chaired the FIP’s board of pharmaceutical practice.

Jordan said in response to news of his appointment that it was time to “rethink” the role of FIP.

“It will be my priority to steer the evolution of FIP regarding its structures, its governance, its procedures and its missions to be in phase with the needs of our members and partners,” he said.

Speaking to The Pharmaceutical Journal, Soni said: “I am humbled and honoured. It is an expression of our role in FIP from an RPS perspective and we will have even greater influence on the work of FIP and what it produces. I hope that I can fulfil people’s expectations of me.”

The 2018 FIP congress in Glasgow, Scotland, brings together pharmacy practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists from around the world to consider ways of extending the role of pharmacists so that they play a full part in ensuring patients, and health systems, achieve full benefit from the medicines people take.

The theme of the 78th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is ‘Pharmacy: Transforming outcomes!’.

This is the first time that the FIP World Congress has been held in the UK for nearly 40 years. The last time was in 1979, making this a truly unique learning opportunity for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists in Great Britain.

UK healthcare company RB is Gold Sponsor of this year’s congress.
