Sir Robert Francis will lead a review on creating a culture of openess at the NHS

Patients in England can now judge whether a hospital has an open culture for reporting and addressing patient safety incidents through a new database on the NHS Choices website.

The department of health (DH) database assesses NHS trusts according to seven safety indicators, and comes as the DH announces a review into creating an open and honest culture within the NHS.

The review will be led by Sir Robert Francis who headed the public inquiry into the failings at the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The DH also wants NHS trusts to support its ‘sign up to safety’ campaign and pledge to halve the incidents of avoidable harm in the next three years.
