Holden steps down as National Pharmacy Association chief

Mike Holden is stepping down as chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) — a representative body for independent community pharmacists — after four years, it was announced on 31 October 2014.

The NPA board said he was leaving to “pursue other opportunities”.

Holden became chief executive in 2011, replacing John Turk. He was previously chief officer for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Local Pharmaceutical Committee, which is behind the Healthy Living Pharmacy initiative that has been rolled out nationwide.

Holden, whose community pharmacy experience spans 30 years, described his time at the NPA as an “enjoyable challenge”, adding: “I believe the NPA is in a stronger position to support members as a result of our work in that period.”

He said the decision the NPA took to represent and support independent pharmacies but also develop closer links with other community pharmacy employers “was undoubtedly the right step” for our members.

NPA chairman Ian Strachan thanked Holden for the past four years and said that he had led the NPA “through a period of significant change”.

Further details about Holden’s departure, when he leaves and who will succeed him were not revealed by the NPA.
