Independent pharmacies eligible for new employment allowance
HM Revenue & Customs (HRMC) has decided to allow independent pharmacies dispensing NHS prescriptions a £2,000 employment allowance.
The allowance, which became available on 6 April 2014, aims to reduce costs for small businesses wishing to hire new staff. It applies to businesses or charities that pay employer Class 1 National Insurance contributions on their employees’ or directors’ earnings.
Independent pharmacies were initially excluded from claiming the allowance because it does not apply to organisations that undertake “functions either wholly or mainly of a public nature”, for example, NHS services. However, after receiving information from pharmacy groups clarifying and giving details of pharmacies’ work, the HRMC explained in writing to the National Pharmacy Association that it has concluded that independent pharmacies will now be eligible to claim the allowance.
