Women will make up 72% of pharmacy workforce ‘by 2030’

Catherine Duggan, chied executive officer at the International Pharmaceutical Federation

There will be a 40% growth in the amount of people working in pharmacy by 2030, shows the largest ever study into the global workforce.

The Pharmacy Workforce Intelligence: Global Trends report by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) was published at the FIP Congress in Glasgow on 4 September 2018. It maps trends in the pharmacy workforce from 2006 to 2016, and predicts that around 72% of the profession will be female by 2030.

“Possibilities to contribute to women and responsible use of medicines is a relatively unexplored territory that pharmacists and their organisations are encouraged to look into,” said Ema Paulino, chair of the report’s working group and FIP Professional Secretary.

Catherine Duggan, the chief executive officer of FIP, said that the report is one of many that are “taking [the global workforce] stepwise further”.

The 2018 FIP congress in Glasgow, Scotland, brings together pharmacy practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists from around the world to consider ways of extending the role of pharmacists so that they play a full part in ensuring patients, and health systems, achieve full benefit from the medicines people take.

The theme of the 78th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is ‘Pharmacy: Transforming outcomes!’.

This is the first time that the FIP World Congress has been held in the UK for nearly 40 years. The last time was in 1979, making this a truly unique learning opportunity for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists in Great Britain.

UK healthcare company RB is Gold Sponsor of this year’s congress.
