Zinc reduces cold duration and symptoms

Taking zinc supplements within a day of onset of a coldreduces the duration and severity of symptoms in otherwise healthy people, aCochrane review has shown (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2011, issue 2).

However, its authors say the jury is still out on whathealthcare professionals can tell the public about optimal dosage, formula orduration. The review also found that children who took zinc syrup or lozengesfor five months or longer caught fewer colds, took less time off school and hadfewer prescriptions for antibiotics.
