Medical device alert: Alco-Prep alcohol skin preparations

Alco-Prep alcohol skin preparation pads, swabs and swabsticks manufactured by H&W cv (see Panel) are being recalled because of the potential of bacterial contamination, which may lead to skin infection.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency alert points out that the affected product is also supplied in drug administration kits and needle exchange packs by:


•    Frontier Medical Group: supplied separately and as part of needle exchange packs
•    MSD/Schering Plough: supplied with ViraferonPeg (peginterferon alfa-2b) pre-filled pens and IntronA (interferon alfa-2b) products
•    Novartis: supplied with Extavia (interferon beta-1b) application kits

Swabs should be quarantined by pharmacists and recipients of drug administration kits and needle exchange packs should be advised to use alternative products.

Affected swabs

All alcohol skin preparation pads, swabs and swabsticks manufactured by H&W cv between September 2007 and April 2010, with lot numbers beginning with “7” up to and including those beginning with “0D” are affected.
