"Z" drug correction
In his letter (PJ, 2 July, p18) Brian Curwain incorrectly states that zopiclone “and the other ‘z’ drugs” are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs legislation. In fact one of the “z” drugs, namely zolpidem was added to schedule 4, part 1, para 1 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations in 2002. Zolpidem is thus subject to the same level of control as most benzodiazepines. Zolpidem was added to Schedule IV of the United Nations single convention on psychotropic substances in March 2001. As a signatory to this convention, the UK was obliged to amend its legislation, even though at that time UK reports of misuse were low.
