Society’s new Foundation Pharmacy Framework provides a gold-standard reference
Developments in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Faculty have moved on apace since its establishment was announced a year ago (PJ, 2013;290:42). Back then, in our Leading article, we echoed the belief held by practically everyone in the profession that the Faculty was the future. We have not changed our view.
The reason for that is simple: the Faculty does exactly what it says on the tin. It provides pharmacists, at least those pharmacists who are RPS members, with a means to develop themselves as advanced level practitioners — and to be recognised for that.
Arguably, though, something has been missing, namely a formal path leading towards the Faculty’s door. That is rectified this week with the announcement, in our News feature, of the Foundation Pharmacy Framework, which is geared towards those who are at a foundation level of practice.
However, it is important to remember that “foundation level” does not apply only to newly qualified pharmacists. It describes the fundamental skills and behaviours that all pharmacists should have and anything further, such as specialism and advanced practice, is built on that gold-standard reference point.
The framework comprises four clusters based on patient care, practice and management, and each of these contains a number of competencies that describe pharmacists’ essential behaviours and skills. Users are encouraged to think about how they meet each competency, and to collect evidence and examples along the way.
It is no understatement to say that the process of self-evaluation is daunting, but the new framework should help all pharmacists, at whatever stage of their careers, to rise to the challenge. Whether they move on to Faculty assessment and membership or not, without doubt their practice will improve as a result.
