Roy initially worked for Timothy Whites & Taylors in Wombwell, before taking up the position of managing director of Associated Chemists (Wicker) in Sheffield during the mid-1950s — a company that he continued to be involved with throughout his career as a director and as company secretary. He spent time with May and Baker as a pharmaceutical representative before buying a pharmacy on Badsley Moor Lane, Rotherham, in 1966, where he spent the remainder of his career.
