Society to roll out new CPD framework to 5,000 pharmacies

The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has committed to the implementation of the next stage of a continuing professional development framework.

At its February meeting, the Council approved a geographical roll-out of a CPD framework that will initially involve about 5,000 pharmacists.

Implementation will begin in late 2002. The pharmacists involved will come largely from one area of Britain, to be determined after consultation. In the autumn, participating pharmacists will receive a CPD pack, which will enable them to keep either written or computer-based plans and records of their CPD. Those taking part will also be advised that in three to five years' time they may be among the first pharmacists to be invited, or required, to produce some or all CPD records for their revalidation for practice.

The President, Marshall Davies, said that implementing the CPD framework would assure competence and fitness to practise. It was an opportunity to give the Society a head start towards becoming a professional leader and world-class regulator.
