The changing role of the pharmacist in the 21st century

However tempting it might be to define the role of a Pharmacist, it should be avoided at all costs. Pharmacists work in many different fields and to attempt to define the role on paper is to diminish it because it is not possible to arrive at an accurate definition that will do justice to all Pharmacists. in fact, attempting to define the role might actually be detrimental, not least because it has the potential to result in a narrow, inaccurate and incomplete definition that would preclude Pharmacists that work outside of the traditional Pharmacist roles. The broad training that Pharmacists receive at university puts them in good stead to be come involved a wide and diverse spectrum of work. The true strength of Pharmacists is that they are taught to think logically and on their feet and they are just as likely to succeed in looking after patients as they are to succeed in running a business, or being involved in scientific research. Pharmacists don't need to have a role defined. Wherever Pharmacists work, people understand their roles and capabilities. Please stop trying to define the role! Spend the time providing them the tools that they need to grow in order to continue to broaden their scope of activities, to understand the evolving healthcare environment and to adapt with it.
