How pharmacists can help prevent an ‘opioid crisis’ developing in the UK

Comment

I am fortunate to work at a GP practice where everyone contributes to making changes. We have managed to decrease the numbers of patients being prescribed strong opioids by 20% over the last 18 months, including getting 2 people off methadone (working with specialist services). We have also stepped down approximately 30 people. This has come about by a combination of methods, including a robust practice protocol, individual medication review and follow up, restricting prescribing quantities, managing tolerance, pain care plans and strong educational messages to patients.
