How to demonstrate empathy and compassion in a pharmacy setting


Persons with intellectual/learning disabilities(ID) may have difficulties in communication and information processing . These difficulties can present an obstacle to understanding social situations such as meeting with a pharmacist and pharmacy staff, often in a busy noisy pharmacy. Consequently, persons with ID are more likely to encounter situations they find overwhelming and stressful e.g. the transfer of information relating to medication. They need attachment figures and /or familiar caregivers to assist in emotion regulation at stressful times and to facilitate the transfer of information. Clinical empathy (CE) [1] seems to be a fundamental determinant of quality in medical care, because it enables the clinician to fulfill key medical tasks more accurately, thereby achieving enhanced patient health outcomes. The integration of biographical experiences and situational factors as determinants of CE in medical care and medical education appears to be crucial to develop and promote CE and ultimately ensuring high-quality patient care. It is important to focus on the person and their abilities and not the disability. See each person with ID as an individual.
