Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network

Angela Timoney becomes first pharmacist to chair Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network council

Angela Timoney, a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, has become the first pharmacist to chair the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) council. Timoney takes over from John Kinsella, professor of anaesthesia at the University of Glasgow’s school of medicine, dentistry and nursing, who has held the post since 2014.

SIGN, part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, uses multidisciplinary working groups to develop clinical guidance aimed at health and social care professionals. It also produces booklets for patients, which present guidance in accessible formats using simple language. The SIGN council plays a crucial part in the guideline development programme by helping to select topics for guideline development and advising on the composition of working groups.

Timoney, director of pharmacy at NHS Lothian, chaired the Scottish Medicines Consortium between 2011 and 2014 — a position in which she was, again, the first pharmacist.

She also chaired the Scottish executive of the then Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain between 2005 and 2006.
