Derek Harold Calam

On 24 September 2017, Derek Harold Calam, aged 81, of Pewsey, Wiltshire. In 1992, Professor Calam became an honorary member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Professor Calam studied chemistry at Oxford University, before completing a PhD in the University’s Faculty of Medicine. During his career, he served as vice-chair and chair of both the British and European Pharmacopoeia Commissions. Calam also chaired the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines Steering Committee on Certification and the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Group responsible for assigning International Nonproprietary Names to new medicinal substances. Calam also advised the WHO on pharmaceuticals and biologicals, and he was an expert advisor to the MHRA.

Between 2005 and 2013, Professor Calam served on the Governent’s Commission on Human Medicines. Prior to this, he served on the Committee on Safety of Medicines.

In 1997, Calam was awarded an OBE for services to the Control of Medicines. In 2016, he was conferred the title of CBE for services to Public Health and the Regulation of Medicines.
