Deaths: Graham Calder

On 28 August 2018, Graham Calder FRPharmS, aged 85 years, of Charlestown Fife, near Limekilns. Professor Calder registered with the Society in 1957 and was conferred Fellowship in 1977.

Calder was Scotland’s chief pharmacist from 1982 until 1992. Prior to this, from 1975 until 1982, he was deputy chief pharmacist in the Department of Health. Between 1965 and 1971, Calder was group chief pharmacist to the Aberdeen General hospitals and, later, to the Orkney and Sheltand hospitals. During this time, he introduced the concept of “ward pharmacy”. Calder also established the Post-qualification Education Board (PQEB) for NHS pharmacists in Scotland — one of three bodies that in 2002 merged to form NHS Education for Scotland (NES).
