Former RPS president Ian Caldwell dies

Ian Caldwell, former Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) president, has died aged 79.

Caldwell registered as a pharmacist in 1960 and, after initial experience in hospital, worked as a community pharmacist from 1961–1964 and then as a works pharmacist and export manager in 1964–1966. Following positions as a manager and then a superintendent pharmacist until 1971, he became a sole proprietor in community pharmacy.

Caldwell was made a committee member of the Society’s Glasgow and West of Scotland branch in 1962, assuming the positions of assistant secretary and secretary before being made chairman in 1975–1977. 
A founder member of the College of Pharmacy Practice, Caldwell was made 
a member of the Pharmaceutical General Council (Scotland) in 1972 and a member of its standing commitee in 1983.

After serving as chairman of the Executive of the Scottish Department of the RPS in 1986–1988, he was elected to the Society’s Council for nine years in 1988–1991 and 1993–1999, during which time he served on several committees, including as chair of the community pharmacy subcommittee and the practice committee. 
He was made a Fellow of the RPS in 1992, which he remained until he died.

Caldwell served for two years as vice-president in 1994–1996, and became RPS president in 1996–1997. In 1998, he was appointed to serve on the disciplinary board of the British Psychological Society. He was awarded a Master of Philosophy degree by the University of Strathclyde in 2002.
