Tribute

Anthony James (Tony) Draper

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of our former colleague Tony Draper who passed away on 21 April 2018. Tony was an enthusiastic pharmacologist and a real gentleman who made an enormous contribution to the University of Bath in his time as lecturer in pharmacology between 1966 and 1998. He will be remembered fondly by all those who worked alongside him, as well as the pharmacy and pharmacology students who were taught by him.

Initially appointed to teach pharmacology to the pharmacy undergraduates at the Bristol College in 1962, Tony moved with the School of Pharmacy to Claverton Down when the university opened in 1966. As well as being a truly outstanding and much-admired teacher, Tony played a full part in the life of the developing university. A founding member of the staff drama group, Bath University Players, he was an accomplished set designer, builder and painter. With his wife, Doreen (who also worked in the library for many years), as producer, he was part of a husband-and-wife team that made a very significant contribution to the student Musical and Operatic Group (MOGS) over many years. In his younger days he was also a stalwart of the Venturers, the university staff cricket team. Tony was also a key member of the team who raised the funding to build the first swimming pool at the University in the 70s. Outside the university, Tony was an accomplished amateur painter, a keen gardener and a knowledgeable plantsman. He also enjoyed hill walking, particularly in Snowdonia and the Lake District.

Our condolences and sympathy are with his wife, Doreen, and his family and friends.

Stephen Ward, head of department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Bath; Malcolm Watson, head of pharmacology, University of Bath; and Philip Rogers, director of teaching, University of Bath
