Professor Barry Cox DSc FRPharmS FBPhS graduated with a BSc (first class honours) in pharmacy, with a special option in pharmacology, from the University of Manchester in 1961. In 1963, he was awarded an MSc in pharmacology by the University of Manchester and, in 1968, he was awarded a PhD by the same university.
Barry was a lecturer and researcher in pharmacology at the University of Manchester Medical School. He attained a readership in 1978 following a sabbatical year as visiting associate professor in pharmacology at the University of California. In 1979, he joined ICI Pharmaceuticals as project team leader in neuropharmacology.
When he retired in 1998, Barry’s position was international portfolio and operations manager in research and development at Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. During this period, he was appointed honorary professor at the Welsh School of Pharmacy, University of Wales College of Cardiff and honorary professor in cardiovascular pharmacology at the University of Sunderland. He served on the committee of the British Pharmacological Society and on the science committee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and he was science chair for the British Pharmaceutical Conference in 1988/1989.
He made many contributions to pharmacology as a professor, reader, lecturer, external examiner, leading academic and industrial scientist/international manager in the pharmaceutical industry (the University of Manchester, ICI Pharmaceuticals and Zeneca Pharmaceuticals) and inventor on several patents.
He published extensively (over 120 papers), held editorial positions for many of the leading pharmacology journals, and is a Fellow and past chair of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
Professor Cox passed away in July 2018 after a long neurodegenerative illness.
