Tribute: Graeme Millar

Others have written eloquently of the many attributes of Graeme Millar, who died suddenly last month. I will, for my part, pay tribute to his contribution to the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences at Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen.

Graeme had been appointed a visiting professor in the school in 2006, and when I took over as head of school in 2010, Graeme was on hand to offer me advice, support and encouragement.

He was a regular attendee at the annual summer graduation ceremony, combining the event with a visit to see his son, who was studying in Aberdeen. We would have lunch in His Majesty’s Theatre following the ceremony, and then, usually, retire to a local hostelry to continue the festivities and put the world to rights.

Graeme was a kind man, generous with his time. A naturally gifted communicator, he would meet and chat to students, their families and friends at graduation, always asking about the students’ plans for their careers in pharmacy, encouraging them to get stuck in and make a difference to the patients under their care. He very much saw students as the future of the profession.

I will miss his company, friendship and generous support, and I wish to express the condolences of all at RGU to Fay, his wife (who is also a pharmacist), and his three children.
