Herbert Roy Broadbent

Roy initially worked for Timothy Whites & Taylors in Wombwell, before taking up the position of managing director of Associated Chemists (Wicker) in Sheffield during the mid-1950s — a company that he continued to be involved with throughout his career as a director and as company secretary. He spent time with May and Baker as a pharmaceutical representative before buying a pharmacy on Badsley Moor Lane, Rotherham, in 1966, where he spent the remainder of his career. This was a traditional pharmacy at the heart of the local community and Roy provided an excellent service, always willing to go that extra mile to help someone. His pharmacy became more like a local drop-in social centre.

He went on to spend time at Rotherham Local Pharmaceutical Committee, both as a member and as secretary.

I first met him back in 1972, when he interviewed me and then awarded me the job of managing director at the Wicker Pharmacy. At that time and ever since, he has been kind, generous and very supportive. After retirement, Roy continued to show a healthy interest in pharmacy, regularly writing to newspapers and phoning the local radio station to champion pharmacy causes. He also continued his interest in Associated Chemists (Wicker),  attending the company’s annual general meeting until very recently.

Condolences to his son John, and daughters Carole and Wendy, along with their families — which includes granddaughter Laura, who is a pharmacy technician.
